This past month I have spent most of my time writing manuscripts and grants – embracing the time between lab experiments to clock some extra desk hours.
One of the aspects of my research I am hoping to expand on is looking at seasonal differences in toxicity. I have a few sites I think would be suitable and I took some time this month to consider the feasibility of access to these areas in the thick of winter.
While winter is my favourite season (bring on the snow!), it can make a simple hike a whole lot harder. Thankfully, I grew up riding snowmobiles/sleds/snow machines (I’ve learned their name is very regionally specific!) and went out to assess some areas for potential project sampling.
Exploring new areas, getting stuck in tree wells, testing the four-legged field assistants, and in (stereo)typical Canadian fashion – sharing the trail with a moose.

The opportunity to bring life experience (especially recreation!) to expand research potential is wonderful!
